BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi – A deep purplish-blue bird with a very stout red bill, reddish legs, and white patches under the tail called Purple Swamphen, locally known as ‘Sambal’ finally returned to its natural habitat after it was rescued on February 21 at Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

The Philippine National Police Maritime Group, led by PLT Khadafy J. Embrahim, caught the waterbird and immediately handed it over to the Provincial ENRE Office of Tawi-Tawi on February 19. The Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Research and Development Services Technical Team then responded and took a thorough assessment for eventual release back into the wild. The technical team believed that the critical evaluation process aims to guarantee the waterbird’s ability to survive and thrive after its release.

After the physical assessment of the said wildlife, CENRE Officer Saido U. Espiliro of District I approved its release to a suitable habitat on February 21, 2024.

“This carefully orchestrated operation not only highlights the dedication of our team but also underscores the importance of wildlife rehabilitation and conservation efforts in preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of our environment,’ said CENREO Espiliro during the release.

The Purple Swamphen resides in marshy, vegetated freshwater bodies, such as swamps, rivers, and lakes, and commonly walks in pairs or small groups. It is listed by the International Union of Conservation of Nature as “Least Concern”. However, it should be fully protected, and community, education, and public awareness should be implemented.
