Five (5) Philippine Hanging Parrots (Loriculus philippensis) were rescued by the Provincial Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy Office (PENREO) of Tawi-Tawi District I during the rescue and release operation of its Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Research and Development Services (BERDS) unit in collaboration with the 1st SOU Maritime Police on March 20 in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

The avian species were initially turned over to the custody of the said office by the law enforcement team last March 15. The species underwent physical monitoring of its health condition as assessed by the BERDS technical team represented by SEMS Alhazien Abdulsani, Chief FMS Alcadra I. Sabal, and EMS II Mohammad Ali B. Mali Jr. before its proper release to the wild.

“Through coordinated initiatives like this, we can actively combat the threats faced by wildlife and create a more sustainable future for these animals,” said CENRO Saido U. Espiliro.

On the other hand, a slow loris (Nycticebus menagensis) was released back to its natural habitat on March 19 in Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi. The said operation was administered by the PENRE Office District II through BERDS, headed by CENREO Abdulmukim J. Maruji.

Also known as ‘Kokam,’ the primate was seen roaming around Brgy. Sapa, Tandubas on March 13. Measuring about 11.4 inches in body length, the species was spotted in poor condition. It was then saved by a citizen who promptly reported the incident to the MENRE Provincial Office.

Upon arriving at the said location, the BERDS technical team conducted a thorough assessment of its health condition. After a thorough and closed monitoring and observation, the slow loris was declared fit for release back into the wild.

Further, an Information, Education, and Communication Campaign with LGU Tandubas on the importance of Wildlife Protection and Conservation to the residents in the area was also held after the release operation.
