MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur—As part of celebrating Philippine Environment Month and in observance of World Environment Day on 5 June 2022, two environmental activities were successfully executed by the Provincial ENRE Office of Lanao del Sur: a cleanup drive and a tree caring activity.

Leading the community cleanup drive conducted along the Sarimanok-Basak Malutlut Highway in the morning of Environment Day was Provincial ENRE Officer Asmarie M. Labao, who said that the “year 2022 is another milestone in MENRE-LDS as we showcase our numerous partners from the field such as PLGUs, LGUs, different line agencies, law enforcement sector, academe, women, and youth, MILF community, CSOs, and media in pursuing environmental education and action. This collaboration is a response to our call: “Ang Programang Pangkalikasan ay programang Pangkalahatan.

”The cleanup was a success, thanks to the participation of the Barangay Local Government Unit officials and constituents of Basak Malutlut, Marawi City, representatives from the Philippine National Police, MPS-Marawi City (PNP), and Special Armed Forces (SAF) Lanao del Sur.

Following the cleanup, a tree caring activity was carried out bearing the theme “Tanim Ko, Aalagaan ko”, which targeted ornamental trees along the Organization of Industrial, Spiritual, and Cultural Advancement (OISCA)-Marawi Farm planted last November 2021 through the Adopt-a-Tree Initiative, a pioneer program of MENRE-LDS.

Supporting the leadership of PENREO Labao are Community ENRE Officers Asnawi A. Dataman and Benjamin D. Alangca who ensured that both activities will be implemented smoothly and follow the Environment Month theme “Aksyon Para Sa Natatanging Mundo” and World Environment Day’s #OnlyOneEarth.

“As environmental champions, we need to promote leadership by example. Hands on dapat, ipakita natin sa ating mga kababayang Meranaw the real essence of public service. The spirit of volunteerism is a must to address environmental problems and strengthen community partnership,” Labao stressed.

The Cleanup Drive and Tree Caring Activity are the first among the series of activities to be conducted during the month-long celebration of Environment Month by the ENRE office. In anticipation, the officials of the provincial office look forward to holding tree growing activities to be led by the two Community ENRE Offices, information campaign, Adopt-An-Estero program, and mountain trekking. A photo exhibit/photo booth will also be open for public viewing during the last week of June to culminate the celebration of Philippine Environment Month.
