DIMAPATOY, Datu Odin Sinsuat — To raise awareness about the threats posed by invasive species, the Ministry’s Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Research, and Development Services (BERDS) conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Campaign and assessment of invasive flora and fauna species at the Dimapatoy Watershed Forest Reserve in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, from September 16-20.

This campaign also highlights the impact of invasive species on biodiversity and ecosystems. During the 5-day activity, educational materials and community outreach programs were carried out, while data was collected to assess the species’ distribution and impact.

Invasive species, which are non-native organisms introduced into ecosystems where they are not naturally found, have been identified as one of the leading threats to biodiversity worldwide. They disrupt local habitats, displace native species, and cause significant economic and ecological damage.

Key officials, including Joharie U. Diao, SEMS PAMD; Fahad L. Talib; Nasrudin A. Nanding; Norombai K. Uda; Zassen A. Maguid; and Sahania A. Kanapia, were also in attendance. Additionally, Abdulsatar K. Mentang from the PENRE Office, For. Yunoz M. Lumna and For. Nasrullah D. Pendaliday from the CENRE Office of the Ministry, and Engr. Muslimin Paglala, MENRE Officer of Datu Odin Sinsuat, were also present.

This campaign marks the first step in safeguarding the environment, with MENRE calling the local communities and stakeholders to play their part and support the ongoing conservation efforts. This assessment also will help inform future conservation and restoration initiatives aimed at mitigating the spread of invasive species and restoring affected ecosystems.
