QUEZON CITY — To discuss the critical components of the National Plan of Action (NPOA) and the Revised Executive Order for the Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF), the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) joined the National Coral Triangle Initiatives on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security Coordination Committee (NCCC) meeting held at SEDA Vertis North, Quezon City on June 19.

The Philippine CTI-CFF National Coordinating Committee, established in 2009, convened this meeting to guide the implementation of the Philippine National Plan of Action in line with the CTI-CFF Regional Plan of Action. The NPOA aims to integrate coastal management, research, policy, planning, capacity building, law enforcement, and education campaigns to protect marine biodiversity and ensure food security.

During the meeting, the participants discussed the drafting of the NPOA and the Revised Executive Order of the CTI-CFF, which pertains to the BARMM Plan of Action—ensuring that the Action Plan is aligned with the CTI-CFF Regional Plan of Action’s six cross-cutting themes: research requirements, enabling policy, planning based on best practices and lessons learned, capacity building, enforcement of environmental laws, and information and education campaigns.

Key participants from MENRE were Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Research and Development Services (BERDS) Senior Ecosystems Management Specialist Joharie U. Diao, PAMD Coastal and Marine Staff Mohaimen G. Macod, OIC PENRE Officer of Sulu Nur-Padzri S. Pao, and Ecosystems Management Specialist II Yunoz M. Lumna.

The MENRE’s participation in the NCCC meeting contributes to the various programs and activities, especially those related to coastal and marine Conservation and Ecosystems. Notably, the Threatened Species Working Group and Seascape Working Group are among the ministry’s big contributions to the CTI-CFF.

Moving forward, the Ministry’s Provincial ENRE Office in Sulu will host the next NCCC meeting, underscoring the region’s growing role in the CTI-CFF and its initiatives.
